All political parties get land for offices in Delhi - no wonder congress party gained the most!
The Congress became entitled for a plot of four acres under a new policy approved by the Union Cabinet on Friday for leasing of land to the political parties in Delhi.
Though claiming to treat all political policies on equal footing under a "uniform and rational" policy, the criteria was so fixed that it benefits the Congress most and the small parties are protesting as they may have to satisfy with just 500 or 1000 sq metres of land.
The strength of the MPs of the parties in both the Houses of Parliament was fixed as the criteria. The Congress has 217 MPs in Parliament and so it got 4 acres meant for the parties with total strength of 201 or more while the BJP having the combined strength of 186 would get only two acres and the CPI(M) having a total 56 MPs ends up with one acre.
The policy provides for two acres to parties having the strength of 101 to 200, one acre to parties having strength of 51 and 100 and 2000 sq metres for parties having strength of 26 to 50 MPs.
Though the Cabinet decision arises from a Supreme Court ruling on the political parties occupying the government properties for perpetuality, the rationale of fixing the criteria on the basis of the present strength of parties in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha is being objected.
BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Congress appeared in a hurry to get the maximum land on the basis of its present strength in Parliament as if it was not sure if it would have that many numbers in future.
Others objected that the parties'' strength in Parliament cannot remain fixed and hence the criteria would entail lowering or increasing the entitlement of the parties after each election.
