At least 58 civilian passengers were killed and another 45 wounded when their bus was hit by a massive mine blast in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday, Government minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the agency.

The casualties were high as the bus was overcrowded with villagers travelling to the main town of Kebitigollewa to buy provisions, said Rambukwella, the Government spokesman for defence-related issues.

"This is the most barbaric terrorist act of the Tigers," he said, accusing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for carrying out the attack. The casualties were high as the bus was overcrowded with villagers travelling to the main town of Kebitigollewa to buy provisions, said Rambukwella, the Government spokesman for defence-related issues. "Among the 58 dead are two Buddhist monks. There are a lot of children among the 45 wounded," he added.
