European equity markets fell to their lowest levels this year after a sell off on Wall Street and Asia overnight amid fears monetary tightening in the US and Europe

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 fell 1.8 per cent to 1,265.33 with the Xetra Dax in Frankfurt down 2 per cent to 5,435.31, the CAC-40 in Paris 1.8 per cent lower at 4,738.10 and the FTSE 100 in London 1.5 per cent down at 5,619.0. But all were off their worst levels of the day.
