Taiwan's Uni-President is seeking acquisition opportunities in China and India
Media Release
May 1, 2006

Taiwan's Uni-President is seeking acquisition opportunities in China and India as part of efforts become the largest food and beverage group in Asia outside Japan within three years, the Financial Times reported on its website, quoting a senior company official.

The push into India follows more than a year of acquisitions in China through which Uni-President is attempting to close the gap with Tingyi, it said.

Uni-President has bought stakes in five beverage companies in China since September 2004.

"We hope to become a 5 billion dollar company before 2008 and so far it looks as if we are in line with this target," the paper quoted Uni-President's executive vice-president Alex Lo as saying in an interview.

Lo said south-east Asia would follow China in delivering double-digit growth rates for Uni-President, and the company will also push into the Indian market.

This would make it the only company in Asia with a comprehensive footprint in every important market in the region, he said.

Uni-President will "definitely seek to acquire an existing company" in India, Lo said. The group is active in both food manufacturing and retailing. "We dont really care which will go first."
