International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should have a framework to find ways and means for reconciliation of various views in Iranian nuke issues : PM Manmohan Singh
Media Release
Apr. 23, 2006

Emphasizing that India favoured "maximum space" being given to dialogue and discussions to resolve the Iran nuclear issue, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday [22 April] said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should have a framework to find ways and means for reconciliation of various views.

"Our position has been that whatever problem has arisen should be resolved through pursuit of dialogue and discussions," he told journalists accompanying him on a visit to Germany.

When referred to the possibility of imposition of sanctions against Iran by the UN, he said "I do not believe that time has come to discuss in those terms."

Singh said as an NPT [Non-Proliferation Treaty] member, Iran had certain rights as well as obligations. "There should be within framework of the IAEA ways and means to find how to reconcile various positions" in the international community.

"We would like maximum space being given to dialogue and discussions," he said.

The Prime Minister said the international community also should be assured that Iran is honouring its its obligations.
