Ecstatic India finds that India-US nuke deal may never materialize – doubtful skeptics of US Congress must amend American. law before the deal can be completed

Oct. 27, 2005

It may the biggest illusion of the century for India! India starts getting the awkward feeling that nuke deal with America is just on paper and it may take decades before becoming reality if ever.

Congress must amend U.S. law before the deal can be completed, and some lawmakers'' comments reflected frustration that their support was being taken for granted.

U.S. lawmakers are telling the Bush administration that congressional support of a landmark proposal to share civilian nuclear technology with India is not guaranteed.

Members of the House International Relations Committee chided the State Department on Wednesday for providing Congress sparse information about the July 18 agreement between President George W. Bush and Indian Prime Minster Manmohan Singh.

Major lawmakers also have sent a letter asking Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to begin consultations quickly with Congress.

Rep. Henry Hyde, the committee's Republican chairman, said "the situation is both strange and unusual in that the Indian authorities know more about this important proposal than we in Congress."
