Jayasuriya fit for India tour despite water polo accident

Sri Lanka's top batsman and former captain Sanath Jayasuriya will be fit to play against India in the upcoming limited-overs series despite a freak water polo accident.

Jayasuriya is recovering from a dislocated shoulder he incurred during a water polo game at the beach resort town of Bentota earlier in the week, cricket officials said Thursday.

"I can confirm such an accident has happened, but Sanath will be fit to play against India," Sri Lanka Cricket spokesman Ashoka Pathirana said.

"We had some water sports in Bentota and unfortunately this accident happened," Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu was quoted by local media as saying.

Atapattu said that the tour of India will assess how good his team is outside their own country.

"We haven''t been really tested for a long period of time and we haven''t played seven one-dayers for a long time," Atapattu was quoted as saying by the state-run Daily News.

The Sri Lanka cricket team was scheduled to leave for the Indian city of Bombay on Thursday.

"We know we have done well in Sri Lanka but it is different when you face the Indians at home. We are all geared up for the tour. Unfortunately we haven''t had the best of batting sessions due to reasons beyond our control," said Atapattu referring to rain that has drenched most parts of Sri Lanka in recent days.

Sri Lanka meets a Bombay Cricket Association President's XI in a one-day practice match at the Wankhede Stadium on Oct. 22 before starting their seven-match limited-overs series at Nagpur on Oct. 25.

The tour is in two stages. Sri Lanka returns home after playing the one-day internationals and returns to India for a three-test series at the end of November.
