Russian troops train with Indian counterparts ahead of joint drill
Anil Rane
Oct. 13, 2005

Russian airborne assault troops have held their first training sessions in northern India. Joint exercises, the scenario of which envisages a parachute drop in the mountains and a lightning seizure of a notional terrorist base, are to start there soon.

Indian Col. Nanda, battalion commander said "Russian weapons are very reliable but we are also interested in your experience of local operations. You have fought in Chechnya, and we in Kashmir. Both areas are mountainous. But we fight in different ways. And that is what's interesting."

The Indian exercises are to show that India is Russia's geopolitical partner, just like China. A cautious reaction on the part of the Pentagon is forecast after the exercises are over, just as happened after the Chinese ones.
