Massive earthquake shakes northern India, Pakistan with 7.6 Richter - more than 2000 killed 10,000 injured in India and Pakistan
A strong earthquake shook northern India, Pakistan and Afghamistan on Saturday, sending worried residents into the streets fearing their homes could collapse. There were no immediate reports of destruction or injuries.
Officials could not be reached for comment, but television reports said the shaking appeared to be centered in northern Punjab state or Jammu-Kashmir.
According to media sources, A powerful earthquake jolted South Asia on Saturday killing at least 190 people in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, a senior state official said.
Most of the deaths occurred in the border towns of Uri, Tangdar, Punch and Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state, said B.B. Vyas, the divisional commissioner of Jammu-Kashmir state.
The dead included 20 soldiers who perished in landslides along the Line of Control that separates the Indian and Pakistani portions of Kashmir, said Col. H. Juneja, an army spokesman.
At least 800 people were injured, Vyas said, adding that soldiers and local volunteers were still pulling people from the debris of collapsed houses. Around 2,700 homes are destroyed or damaged in Jammu-Kashmir, he said.
According to Pakistan Media sources, Aamagnitude 7.6 earthquake jolted South Asia on Saturday, killing many people and injuring hundreds of others in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. The Pakistani military said at least 1,000 people were feared dead, a television news station reported.
Several villages in northern Pakistan were buried in landslides triggered by the quake, said Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, the Pakistani army's chief spokesman.
"The damage and casualties could be massive and it is a national tragedy," Sultan said. "This is the worst earthquake in recent times."
