Can India protect Hindus in Kashmir ? PM, Hurriyat talks begin
The critical stage of kashmir sttlement has come.
The biggest question is can India protect the Hindu minorities in Kashmir who have been ethnically cleansed by the Kashmiri militants.
The crucial talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Mirwaiz Omar Farooq-led moderate Hurriyat Conference on the Jammu and Kashmir issue began here this evening.
A high-level team is assisting Dr Singh, comprising Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Centre's Interlocutor on Kashmir N N Vohra, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and senior Home Ministry officials at the talks.
The Mirwaiz Omar Farooq-led Hurriyat delegation includes Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat, Maulana Abbas Ansari (both former Hurriyat Chairpersons), Bilal Ghani Lone and Fazal Haq Qureshi.
The meeting, being held at the PM's 7, Race Course Residence, marks the resumption of the much-awaited dialogue on the Kashmir issue after more than one and a half years.
The meeting is the first between the Hurriyat leaders and the Prime Minister after the installation of the UPA government in May 2004.
It will be held barely ten days before Dr Singh meets Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in New York on September 14 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
The Hurriyat leaders had held two rounds of talks with then Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani when the BJP-led NDA Government was in power at the Center.
