World seeing American failures in New Orleans, misjudgments in Iraq, strange oil crisis – is America still a superpower?
Balaji Reddy
Sep. 3, 2005

A massive hurricane struck the gulf coast of America. Katrina affected millions – perhaps the most devastating storms in the last fifty years. But something happened beyond that. The world woke up to a very astonishing reality!

The world may not have any superpower left! The way America handled the New Orleans tragedy and gulf coast devastation is similar to the way a typical third world country handles similar situations. Some might point out that this was a manifestation of the complex rich versus poor phenomenon. But actually it is way beyond that.

A superpower is defined not only by the sheer strength of the military but also shrewdness. Napoleon did not have the largest Army but the fact is his shrewdness made him unbeatable.

A superpower is a power that is charge of the world. It is a leader. It is unbeatable easily. It is a country that other countries depend upon.

What people all over the world saw was unbelievable. The so-called superpower America failed to take care of its own citizens (it does not matter rich or poor). Compare America’s relief effort in New Orleans with that of India’s during Tsunami of 2004.

And now add to that “Shock and Awe” war of Iraq – a classical misjudgment of tactical geopolitical move. It is exactly opposite of Napoleon. With world best ever military America is in Iraq debacle.

But what surprised the whole world is the inability of the American Government to monitor, relieve and support the poor population of America in New Orleans and Biloxi – two major gulf ports.

The recent oil price spike is also interesting. There are no shortages, but prices have escalated like never before. It is a neat effect of well planned gouging and speculation by the hedge funds, oil companies and petroleum oligarchs of the world. The experts point to lack of refining capacity in America. But why should a superpower not have enough refining capacity either inside the country or outside?

Now add to all these American budget deficit, trade deficit and adverse balance of payments.

All these point to systematic long-term failure of a great country.

One good thing about America is its people. American people unlike American Government are much more efficient. This is probably true for many countries. People who choose politics these days are normally power hungry failures from other fields. American people are smart, hard working and above all determined. That is what makes a country great.

While external signs are in place that America is no longer a super power – American people tend defy those signs. People are what make a great country in the modern times. On that account America is still the greatest superpower and perhaps the only superpower of this millennium.
