India acts like a regional superpower – ready to help Fiji inside out
India is growing fast as a regional super power. Soon it will start acting as a superpower. India is increasingly starting help other countries in terms of technologies, education, trade and even defense. This is going far beyond the South Asia region. The ideal example is Fiji.
The marked improvement in bilateral relations between India and Fiji has been a highlight for the two countries this year, says Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola. Mr Tavola made the comment ahead of celebrations to mark India's 58th anniversary of independence today.
Mr Tavola said the highlight of this year's celebrations would be the increasing bilateral relations between the two countries. He said this would be especially significant as Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase would open Fiji's diplomatic mission in New Delhi in October. This is the first diplomatic mission for Fiji on the sub-continent since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 1999.
"The relations between the two countries have been more meaningful and deeper," he said.
India has offered technical expertise to help reform Fiji's sugar industry while trade talks have just concluded. "I will be reporting to cabinet the results of these talks on Tuesday [16 August] and there's been a lot of positive indicators."
