Can India export Internet Firewall technologies? US-based WatchGuard Technologies a firewall security company ties-up with Bangalore-based Inflow Technologies

India is strong is building client specified hard coded software as per requirements of the client. But India is weak in innovative software design that can be marketed to companies all over the world. One such sector of explosive growth is Internet Firewall technologies. India could develop little in this field that can be exported to the Western world. The oil rich Middle East and African countries accept India’s software packages at best. It is time for India software oligarchs to build some real software that can be marketed to the world for its technical innovation instead of cheap labor because of artificial lower Indian currency values.

According to media sources, US-based WatchGuard Technologies, which is into firewall security appliances, has tied-up with Bangalore-based Inflow Technologies to market its range of security products to the small and medium enterprises in the second-tier cities, its India head Ajit Pillai said Friday.

"We have been growing at over three-digit levels in India in the last six-seven months. The partnership with Inflow Technologies will take us to Class-B cities such as Pune, Ahemedabad, Hyderabad and Kochi," Pillai said.

The firewall security appliances, that act as a gatekeeper by deciding what information that should be allowed to come in and go out on the IT network, is a US$120 million market in India.

He said the company was targeting the small and medium enterprises for growth by coming out with specific range of products aimed at this segment.

Currently, only the banking and finance sector was taking enough steps to protect themselves from security risks by putting in place foolproof systems, he said, adding that once more transactions take place over the Net in sectors such as manufacturing, many more companies would adopt the firewall security appliances.

WatchGuard, which had over 80 per cent of the business coming from the US market some years back, now had over 20 per cent of its revenues coming from the Asia-Pacific market.

To address the queries and complaints of its worldwide customers, the Seattle-based company operates a full-fledged 300-seater call centre `R Systems'' at Gurgaon, Pillai, who is also in-charge of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka markets, said.
