Massive Human Right crisis - India, Bhutan and Nepal Let Bhutanese refugees return home
Sudhir Chadda
Aug. 7, 2005

It is a catastrophic crisis in the area of preserving human rights. India, Nepal and Bhuran are still dragging their feet on this matter.

Bhutanese refugees must use Indian land to return home. They entered Nepal 15 years ago via India. Since then, their repeated attempts to return home have failed. Every time the refugees try to cross the border, the Indian police have stopped them forcibly. They did the same last Wednesday [3 August]. They said that they had been given orders not to let the refugees return via India. India has been neglecting the fact that its cooperation and goodwill is needed to facilitate the return of the refugees. Indian negligence, coupled with the Bhutanese tactic of protracting the issue, has forced the more than 100,000 refugees to live in difficulty.

The refugee issue has already been internationalized. The European Union parliament has twice passed a resolution seeking the resolution of the problem. Donor nations including the United States have asked Bhutan to resolve the issue. But due to the foot-dragging strategy of the Bhutanese government, the refugees are losing their patience.
