Time for Yashwant Sinha to take control of BJP

Jun. 29, 2005

It is about time to bring BJP back to mainstream India from the directionless party agenda for the last several years. A defiant Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said he will not quit BJP but continue to raise issues of ideology and people while remaining within the party, which he felt, had not taken his statements in the ‘right spirit’.

According to media sources, Returning to the capital a day after his sacking as BJP spokesperson for his remarks against party president L.K. Advani and the Jharkhand government, he said, “there is speculation that I am planning to quit the party. I am not leaving the party. I’ll keep raising the issues that have to do with the ideology of the party and the problems of the people while staying within the party.”

Sinha, a minister in the Vajpayee government, said his remarks in the wake of the Jinnah controversy, widely perceived to be against Advani, were not against him but related to the issue of ideology and the problems faced by the people of Jharkhand. It was a coincidence that the two statements came close to each other.

“It is obvious that the party has not taken it (his statements) in the right spirit. Otherwise it would not have relieved me of my responsibilities,” Sinha said.

He said the party had done the ‘right thing’ against him keeping in mind discipline.

In an apparent sarcasm, Sinha said, “I was aware that as I speak on behalf of my party, if I comment on the party president, which is unauthorised, or my own party’s government, it is beyond the responsibilities of the spokesman. Hence I am not surprised that I have been removed (from the post of spokesperson)”.

On Tuesday, the party announced reconstitution of the panel of its spokespersons by Advani in which Sinha’s name was left out while the others Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Prakash Javdekar and Manavendra Singh were retained.

The action came after Sinha maintained his attack against the Munda government despite being asked not to air his views in public.

Sinha, who originally came from the Janata Dal stream in politics and was Finance and External Affairs Minister in the Vajpayee government, had created a flutter when he described Advani’s remarks on Jinnah as unnecessary.

He had also said that Advani, after his resignation as party chief, should consider whether he could be effective as leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Subsequently, he attacked the party’s government in Jharkhand, describing it as corrupt and extravagant.
