Can Manmohan Singh really afford to reshuffle the Cabinet in June?
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may go in for a major Cabinet reshuffle in June, based on the performances of his ministers. But can he really afford to do it?
The Government runs with the help of a fragile coalition of former enemies. The ideological differences are very wide.
Rail Minister Lalu Prasad too may have to pay for charges against him in the fodder scam besides the sudden turn of events in Bihar. He may be shifted to a lighter Ministry. But that will make Lalu angry and wary. He is someone who is totally unpredictable.
JMM chief Shibu Soren, who had been unsuccessful in retaining power in Jharkhand, may be reinducted into the Cabinet. This may serve the coalition but it will also cause problems from BJP.
Petroleum and Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and Steel and Fertilisers Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who have been holding dual charges, may be divested of one portfolio.
All the possible moves are controversial. The best thing that could have happened for the Government is to have the Left Front in the Government.
