Indian IT talent shows its worth - Indians bag $1-mn IT prize but there are signs of trouble

Are Indians really worth all these IT outsourcing boom? Well the answer came back with a strong yes!

Two Indian teams along with an Indian from New York have emerged tops in the milllion dollar Computer Associates software development challenge.

Altogether 8 Indians, including 5 young computer professionals from New Delhi, two from Kerala and one veteran from New York divided the CA Ingres Million Dollar Challenge that drew thousands of applications from around the world.

The winners have developed migration toolkits from Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL to CA's Ingres r3 open source platform. Between them, the three have netted $550,000 in prize money.

Well that’s the good news. But reality hits the road before you can really think. Indian software engineers are lagging behind for many years in the area of systems software development. Writing bunch of “if then else, for loops and array manipulation” is really high school stuffs. But when it comes to writing firmware, software engineering and hardware interface, Indian software engineers lagging behind.

People say you need to crawl and walk before you can run. Well Indian software engineers have been crawling and pushing the outsourcing cart for twenty years now. When are they going to run in the Olympics?

Where real sophisticated software development from Indian software engineers is taking place is Indian Space research Organization, DRDO (Defense Research), Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and similar organizations. Advanced software development in these organizations is really advanced and is surpassing any other country in the world.

On the same token, common Indian software engineers are busy using Microsoft, IBM or Unix platforms to develop tedious applications that really talented software engineers refuse to work on. In the Western nations, rarely Indians are asked to perform strategically significant software code or architecture due to security clearance issues.

Indian so called body shopping software service companies are really headed by traders that are trying to make a few quick bucks exploiting innocent and naïve Indian software engineers. That is also true for Indian companies in India. The same so-called quick money Indian entrepreneurs are now also selling mortgages in America. These guys will do anything to make easy money.

But Indian software engineers though large in number are really treated as glorified clerks. In UK they are even called cyber coolies!
