Pakistan’s opposition calls for unity to remove Pakistani dictator’s protégés
In the middle of all the India Pakistan diplomatic exchanges, something much more interesting is happening in Pakistan. The democratic process in Pakistan is becoming alive.
According to media reports from Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto's husband and a PPP Senator, has urged the people of Pakistan to unite against what he identified as the protégés of the country's military dictators. Addressing PPP activists at a rally near the Attock Bridge threw phone from Lahore, Zardari claimed that present "quasi-government" headed by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and over seen by President Pervez Musharraf had failed on all fronts.
"We are harbingers of a culture of tolerance, liberalism and enlightenment. We are a future force. We will sweep away the remnants of bigots and their masters with the help of the masses," several Pakistani dailies quoted him as saying. Paying tribute to PPP activists who had courted arrest in their bid to welcome him home on Saturday from Dubai, he said that their presence in Lahore certified that the country's rulers were weak. Zardari's message created a sense of euphoria at the rally that was held on Saturday against all odds.
