Pakistan and India agree to be real friends – end row over Kashmir
Preetam Khanna and Hanif Mohammed
Apr. 17, 2005

We are friends for ever said the Presidents of India and Pakistan smiling cordially at the Indian and Pakistani reporters as they greeted each other.

India and Pakistan on Sunday pledged to take forward their peace process and keep talking to resolve their Jammu and Kashmir dispute without being burdened by deadlines and conditions.

It is a new atmosphere of friendship and peace said Musharraf.

President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed to boost trade and movement of people, including across the Line of Control (LoC), that cuts Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

"I''ve come here with the message of peace. I''ve prayed for the prosperity of the people of the two countries" said General Musharraf.

After his exhaustive talks with Manmohan Singh, Musharraf attended a lunch hosted by Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam and then separately met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, both of whom he invited to visit Pakistan.

"The talks were held in a positive atmosphere and on a positive note," a visibly pleased Musharraf, dressed in a grey business suit, told journalists. The entire gamut of issues including Jammu and Kashmir was discussed. "I am happy with the talks."

The India-Pakistan peace process, he added, was "moving in the right direction".
