Interesting development in Palestine’s democratic process - Palestinian National Authority (PNA) afraid of Hammas?
Hamas is not happy about possible delaying of election by Abbas the new leader of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) might postpone the July legislative elections to avoid defeat at the hands of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, IRNA reported April 16. The official Iranian news agency quoted Fatah Member of Parliament Hatem Abdul Qader that the delay was to be formally announced in a few days and had more to do with procedural issues. He said the delay was the decision of the PNA's executive branch, but PNA Mahmoud Abbas was accusing lawmakers from the Palestinian Legislative Council of the decision.
Hamas warned Fatah on April 16th against an alleged decision to postpone the July legislative elections, which he termed as representative of the internal schism within the mainstream Palestinian movement. In an interview with IRNA, Hamas Gaza chief Mahmoud Zahar accused "certain elements within" the ruling Palestinian group of pursuing their narrow goals over Palestinian national interests because they fear that they would loose authority. Zahar added that Hamas might resort to street protests to prevent the delay in elections, which he said would weaken Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Hammas is getting more popular among the Palestinians especially the yonger generation. Abbas, the new PNA leader has a real challenge in front of him. He needs to take a moderate path while keeping the Palestinian sentiment in mind.
