Can Talbani the Kurd separatist ever bring Iraq together?
It was interesting to see Jala Talibani the new Iraqi president. All his life he fought for forming a new country - Kurdistan. He even shook hands with Saddam to keep autonomy in Iraqi Kurd areas. Today he sits at the President of a fragile coalition of the “democracy of convenience”. His primary task is to bring the country together. For the first time he is faced with what he opposed and fought all his life.
Some good happened for him. The parliamentary bloc of outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi agreed to join the country's new government April 10 after initially saying that it would sit in opposition. A spokesman said that Allawi is in negotiations, and that the bloc hopes to receive four Cabinet portfolios, including one of the leading ministries. With 40 seats, Allawi's bloc is the third largest bloc in the 275-seat Parliament.
However, the militant group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi rejected a call by Iraq's new president to end the insurgency April 10. In an unverified statement posted to an Islamist Web site, al-Zarqawi accused President Jalal Talabani of being an agent of the United States. Talabani recently said that some insurgents could be offered an amnesty in return for giving up violence.
