Anna Hazare defines new norm of true democracy -- will the limited party western democracys learn?
Sonia Joshi
Aug. 28, 2011

Anna Hazare's movement wins. People of India win. It is a defeat for corrupt arrogant highhanded Governance by an unpopular Government lead by a family dominated politics. The bigger question is : Will the so called democratic nations in the West learn anything from this?

When President Obama did win in 2008, Anna Hazare of America did happen. But eventually Obama Administration turned out to be the same in many respect except some new faces and names. Today the same people who contributed to Obama campaign are disillusioned.

America's tea party revolution is also dominated by a the right wing politics. The politics in Western Europe is not very different. Coalition politics does not guarantee true empowerment of people, a two party system definitely does not. It is the ability to stand peacefully for a cause and sacrifice that makes the difference.

When Anna Hazare was sent to Tihar Jail, the true vulgar face of the current Indian regime was exposed. When Senator Barbara Baxer of California arranged the closed door meeting between Hillary Clinton and Obama in 2008 for a reconciliation between the two, America lost its Anna Hazare. First thing President Obama did is to go for lunch with George Bush!

There is a lot to learn from India's Anna Hazare movement. India is lucky to have Mahatma Gandhi, Anna Hazare, and others who are fearless in front of brute force dominated by foreign powers or families. But countries like USA, UK , France, Germany do not have these kind of leaders. That is why these western nations have low voter turnout which shows that people have lost confidence in the electoral process.

Anna Hazare says the next step is electoral reform. That is marvelous. India will perhaps lead the world in showing the essence of true democracy. I sometimes wonder what would Hitler have done if Mahatma Gandhi was Jewish in Germany in late nineteen thirties? What would have current communist regime of China do to Anna Hazare if Anna was leading a Chinese peaceful movement in Tinaman Square?
