China premier's South Asia tour to draw India into a long term China-India coalition that can be the most powerful power block in the world
Balaji Reddy
Apr. 5, 2005

Wen Jiabao, China's prime minister makes his first tour of South Asia. He will tour Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and then India. The trip to Pakistan is to provide a manifestation of solidarity to an old friend of China. But the focus is really on India tour. India and China plans to create a new Asian power block that will largest in the whole world.

“India and China between them account for over one-third of humanity and are the two powerhouses of Asia,” said Nalin Surie, India's ambassador to Beijing. “Our two countries are in the process of rediscovering each other. Relations have progressed steadily over the last five years.”

In Pakistan the talks will be more in spreading trade instead of just supplying arms to Pakistan.

After stopping off in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Mr Wen is due in India on Saturday. Chinese analysts do not expect progress towards resolving a four-decade border dispute, other than agreement on a framework for talks. But this would be a substantial achievement, as it would allow both countries to focus on how to maintain the momentum of the relationship, which has seen bilateral trade swell from $1.8bn (€1.4bn, £961m) in 2001 to $14bn in India's current financial year.

Closely watched will be Mr.Wen’s visit to Bangalore – the silicon valley of the East. Chinese companies want to partner with Indian IT companies to wedge the conquest of the high tech markets in the world.
