Kashmir's Geelani calls for nonviolent protest, release of all Kashmiri detainees, revocation of black laws and total pull out of troops
Anil Razdhan
Aug. 5, 2010

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), today made a fervent appeal to the people to remain peaceful and not to resort to violence during protests. He also demanded release of all Kashmiri detainees, revocation of black laws and total pull out of troops.

''Please do not attack government buildings, police stations and railway station as such acts rather than helping cause damage our cause,'' Geelani said while addressing a press conference.

“Our movement is peaceful. Rather than helping, the violence is damaging our movement. We are the victims of the suppression of government of India and J&K government. With violence we should not project ourselves as those resorting to suppression,” he said. The Hurriyat (G) chairman stated that he understands that violent protests are the natural reaction against Indian suppression and killings of Kashmiris by forces. “But we have to control our emotions and remain peaceful. We have to remain on high moral grounds as we are running our movement,” he said. The Hurriyat (G) chairman added that even with violent protests Kashmiris are at the receiving end. “Our own people are getting killed in police and forces firing. We have lost 50 of our persons during these days. The people must continue peaceful protests and stag protest sit in wherever they are stopped from holding demonstrations by police and forces,” he added.
