Abu Ghraib Prison attacked in Iraq, 40 U.S. troops wounded – acceleration or residual insurgency?

Apr. 3, 2005

It take a lots of guts to attack Abu Ghraib prison in a coordinate fashion and engage US troops in a 40 minute gun-battle. International think tanks question at this stage id this new wave of insurgency or a desperate attempt by insurgents running out of determination and resources?

According to a media report, Around 40 to 60 insurgents attacked coalition forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad on 2nd April. The insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades attacked the prison, while two suicide car bombers detonated themselves in a coordinated assault. U.S. soldiers and Marines stationed at the facility responded. Forty U.S. troops and twelve prisoners were wounded in the battle, which lasted about 40 minutes.

Iraqi insurgent’s all on a sudden new strength is shocking many international analysts. Media in recent days were reporting that the insurgencies in Iraq were a matter of the past.
