Indfian Army in charge in Kashmir, Congress Government talks toough, people of Kashmir defies the local authorities
Subur Nath
Jul. 9, 2010

Hurriyat Conference (G) has asked the people to march towards Hazratbal shrine on Friday night for prayers and stage peaceful protests.
Indian Army maintained its “deterrent” presence on the scene while Maj Gen George of Kilo Force and in charge of army deployment in Kashmir, set out the inner and outer limits of army intervention.
It was the tone of union home secretary G K Pillai and union home minister P Chidambaram’s statements that indicated toughening of the centre’s attitude as well as its tightening grip on handling the situation. While Pillai made it known that the state authorities have been directed to come down heavily on “trouble makers,” Chidambaram “advised” parents to prevent their children from violating curfew or joining protest demonstrations.
Gag on the local media continued without any let up while select group of visiting TV and other reporters from Delhi were allowed freedom of movement. Surprising “breaking news” of the day was the purported intercept of a telephone conversation between two locals allegedly talking about funds for stone pelters and suggesting “more sacrifices” to keep the situation going. The news quoted ‘highly placed sources.’
