For the first time the Saffron partyn and the communists agreed to go on their own to call the biggest strike in India in recent days.

India saw a total strike after a long time. More than 60 long-distance trains were cancelled or disrupted, according to railway ministry officials.

The 16-hour strike called by opposition parties against the recent fuel price hike threw road and rail transport and cargo handling out of whack, particularly in the Left Front and Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states.

More than 100 domestic and international flights were canceled and trucks stayed off the roads. Offices were either shut or reported thin attendance in many parts of the country and markets were deserted.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)says that the total losses to the economy was Rs.13,000 crore. Unofficial estimates rates it even higher.
