India is growing faster as an economic power than a real superpower ready to help other nations and defend other democracies if need be. The perception comes from the age-old humbleness of Asian culture. During the Tsunami time early this year, India showed the capability and collective capacity of a budding superpower that is capable of facing natural disasters and also extending the helping hands to other nations in need.

As independent India matures, the perception is rapidly changing. Today India is ready to prove to the whole world it is a real super power – economically and strategically. The Western nations are realizing that fast. The expatriate Indians have helped changing international perception. To day the name “India” is not associated with a “person begging in the metropolis” or an orphan child waiting for compassion of a Westerner. Today India stands tall, it has defied all equations of welfare nation and have become one of the most vibrant economic power in a span of twenty years. Imagine India today and India when Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. What we see and hear about India is the collective creation and the result of numerous untold sacrifices of many Indians in sixties and seventies when the base infrastructure was built. The United Nations in late sixties called India a “Basket” case – in other words “hopeless beggar nation”. Today the same United Nation is being challenged for not accepting India as a permanent member of the Security Council.

The superpower status has to be earned. Testing a few nuclear bombs just does not make it. Then Pakistan, North Korea all could become a super power. The definition of superpower is not just be a strong military power. It is the power of influence on a region and other countries. India’s challenge now is more in diplomacy than economics and military strength. America is super power because at the time distress people in the world look towards America for help. American culture – the Hollywood movies and the “American Dream” is cherished all over the world. Similarly India has to create the image of a compassionate but strong country in favor of democracies. India needs to prove itself in South Asia first and then in Asia and finally in the world.

The first step may have started. India is influencing Nepal to bring back the democracy. India has joined hands with Sri Lanka to help the island nation.

India plans to work with Mauritius for join economic progress. According to media report, India and Mauritius Thursday agreed to jointly conduct a survey for hydrocarbons in the island nation's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and to strengthen their defence cooperation.
