Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda, 53, chairman of CPN-Maoist is the new Prime Minister of Nepal – what does that mean for India?
Seema Pradhan
Aug. 15, 2008

Maoist chief Prachanda is the first Prime Minister in post-monarchy Nepal as he swept a Constituent Assembly vote trouncing his Nepali Congress rival, four months after leading the former rebels to a surprise victory in the polls.

Parchanda is a controversial figure. There are countless skeleton in his closet but he call them necessary dues of Nepali patriotism.

CPN-Maoist that launched a decade-long armed struggle against monarchy, grabbed 464 votes out of the 577 cast in the 601-strong Constituent Assembly, after he received the backing of another major Left party the CPN(UML) and the Terai-based Madhesi Rights People's Forum.

What does this mean for India? It is a mixed bag of good and bad. The good part is that the monarchy, which was a nuisance, is gone. A democratically elected leadership is in place. The bad part of it is that the new Nepali Government is enthusiastic about China just East Europeans are about America. Just like America is using the East Europeans to fulfill their ambitious strategic worldwide expansion plans, China may start doing that in Nepal against India.

What Russia faces in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, India may face the same in Nepal. For example, like US wants to put missile defense system in Poland, China may want to put the same against India in Nepal.

Indian political leaders are little informed and mostly naive. Just like these Indian political leaders created massive problem for India in the energy sector, they are also miscalculating the possible Chinese threats in Nepal. Indian political game in Nepal has failed miserably. Parchanda in the first step wants to provide the same privilege to China as Nepal does to India.
