Pakistan Military faces internal showdown between Musharraf elements and ISI elements with the Army, Navy and Air Force
Kiran Chaube
Aug. 9, 2008

Internal war of words is raging the floors of Military establishment of Pakistan. 20% of Pakistan’s Military is allied to former ISI chief and current Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kiyani. Another 15% is ardent followers Musharraf. The rest 65% are sort of neutral.

Musharraf considers Pakistan as his own empire. The man he trusted and made the Pakistan's army chief General, Ashfaq Kiyani, now wants Musharraf to go. Musharraf’s down fall happened when he had to bite the bullet and concede in having former ISI mastermind Ashfaq Kiyani as the Pakistan's army chief General.

Now the tussle is very clear. A middle ground is being sought by the neutral component of the Military. While not many in the Pakistan Military like the political parties of Pakistan including PPP, most are against allowing Musharraf to use the Military in Pakistan against the common people of Pakistan.

Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kiyani wants to get rid of any shadow effect of Musharraf in the horizon. He wants Musharraf to resign and be away from the Army as far as possible. The pro-Musharraf elements wants Mush to continue and regain Military power structure.

The compromise theory, now endorsed by the Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kiyani calls for Musharraf to step down and not get charged with any political crime.

The Daily Telegraph quoted an unnamed senior government official from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party as saying the army has "whispered in Musharraf's ear that it is time to leave".

"Over the next few days they will make it clear to him (Musharraf) that a protracted battle (against impeachment) is not in Pakistan's interests," he added.

It will be very difficult for Musharraf to stay is Pakistan with out direct support of the Army. Pakistan is a volatile state. Musharraf’s life is not safe in Pakistan. He may also face the justice for the atrocities he has committed from a future Pakistani civilian or military Government.
