India is obsessed with SAP based custom software application – what happened to packaged software? Where is the Indian software talent?
Harish Baliga
Jul. 6, 2008

It is interesting to see Indians no matter where they are trying get certified as SAP analysts or developers. Whether is in India or America, Indians are all after getting SAP certified. An Indian American department chair of a prominent school of business in NJ who received his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Management is also SAP certified. The moment you smell SAP you see Indians all around it and they do whatever necessary to get SAP certified.

SAP is an excellent environment to build custom tailor made application for western companies. If you know a little math and have some logic in your brain, SAP helps you to create Meta level application. It is a great tool to build business applications easily. How far these applications are usable is a different story.

SAP, PeopleSoft and Oracle suits have fed well in the frenzy of getting expensive custom applications made in India and elsewhere. Indians are eager to provide the custom service no matter which part of the world they are. To become a SAP developer and analyst you need seventh grade school level knowledge and some money to get certified.

Indian software professional have failed miserably in developing systems application. Why become slave of SAP and not create SAP like tools itself. Why become salve of Oracle and Microsoft, why not at least develop Linux like operating systems? After twenty-eight years of creating zillion cyber slave programmer and analysts, India still could not produce single packaged software that could be sold in excess of 10,000 copies in United States.

Are Indians really morons? Not quite, say the experts. Real Software entrepreneurs like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are mixture technical skills and marketing skills. India just cant find people with both qualities in one. Some Indians are traders. They like to sell programmer bodies and make some money per jour. It is no different than selling potatoes in the market except the ‘potatoes’ here are live educated young programmers. You buy them cheap with all kinds of promises and sell them high to the American and the Europeans. These traders own the TCS, Wipro and Infosys making money by trading skills.

There are real talented Indians who work for these moron traders. They have technical sense but no business sense. As a result, India is stuck as third world software development nation that knows the tricks of software development but cannot sell its own software package.
