Indian Government reduced to minority as several SP MPs plan to vote against Manmohan Singh’s Government in spite of Malayam’s support
Congress party finally snubbed the communists of India after enjoying their votes for several years. But a little surprise waits for Dr. Manmohan Singh.
"Government has the numbers. We are ready to prove it in the Lok Sabha whenever we are called upon to do so," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi told reporters.
As Mr. Ravi was talking, some SP MPs and other smaller parties are making their own comments that they will oppose the government in no confidence motion.
The CPI(M) has said the Left parties would vote against the UPA Government in Parliament in case of a confidence motion on the agreement.
"If there is a vote of confidence in Parliament on the issue, the Left will vote against the Government. But we will do so only after the Government formally conveys its decision to proceed with the deal," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told recently.
"We thought it would be on domestic policy. But since July 2005, when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went to Washington, it (nuclear deal) has been running thread of the conflict. Two years ago, we knew this was an issue on which we would not compromise," Karat said.
Without the Left’s support, the UPA coalition will have to depend on 14 other smaller parties with a hair thin margin. On a daily basis it will have to assess if it can survive.
The president of India is a hand picked disciple of Sonia Gandhi. That will help but in the longer run it will better for Manmohan to quit the Parliament and start campaigning for the next election.
