Life as we know, has three vital biological signatures. They are metabolism, replication, and evolution that is the difference between organic compounds and a cell that is also made of organic compounds.

Terrestrial life is composed of a few basic organic compounds – the lipids, the amino acids or proteins and the carbohydrate or glucose. It is also composed of water, some trace materials like minerals, vitamins and so on. In medical technologies, living processes that make us live and experience life is called biochemical pathways. These pathways perform specific functions that contribute to the whole living being.

Living beings in this earth minimally consists of a cell. The cell, if you analyze, is a marvelous piece of engineering. Please understand the cell is also made of the basic ingredients - the lipids, the amino acids or proteins. But if you keep the lipids, the amino acids or proteins together, the cell is not formed automatically. Most interestingly the cell not only just lives i.e. performs metabolism but it also replicates. That is not the end of it, through a process known as mutation, which is essentially an imperfect replication it evolves into intelligent life forms.

Therefore life is just not some organic compounds. It is also computer algorithms (instruction sets) that combine these organic materials to perform pathway function which in turn provide the three vital signatures of life – the metabolism, replication, and evolution.

Now when we look for extraterrestrial life forms, we just cannot look for someone like us or an enlarged ant or an intelligent dinosaur. The law of life that dictates the evolution of life is embedded within the universe. Life may not be a combination of the lipids, amino acids and carbohydrates only. It can be quantum materials or dark matter that we have just started to learn about.

If one has to search for extraterrestrial life, one has to keep an open mind and look for the three vital signs of life - metabolism, replication, and evolution. Many scientists believe that many other life forms are all around us. We just cannot see them because we try to find something just like us. We will very seldom find something that is even close to terrestrial life forms.

Other planets, solar systems and galaxies have different conditions but the law of life is consistent in the universe like the law of gravity is consistent. Wherever possible, life has taken a form. But it essentially carries the three vital signatures - metabolism, replication, and evolution.
