PM Manmohan Singh wants to look good with nuke deal approved before meeting US President George Bush in early July
Kiran Chaube
Jun. 25, 2008

It is all about looking good to a failed president of a super power. PM Manmohan Singh wants to reach a final decision on the deal before the G-8 summit in Japan starting on July 7. He is reportedly reluctant to meet with leaders such as President George W. Bush without a commitment for the deal.

Can that be the reason to sell Indian strategic and nuclear sovereignty to a western super power?

Many believe it is not just looking good but much more than that. $100 billion of the hard earned Indian tax money will be transferred to American corporations like GE, Westinghouse and others under the deal for supplying India nuclear technologies and equipments.

"Our point we have explained that we will not allow the government to go to IAEA for approval," Debabrata Biswas, a senior communist leader, told reporters after Wednesday's meeting between the Congress party leadership and the communists in India.

The main opposition party in India, BJP, who initiated and rejuvenated Indian nuclear ambition with fresh nuclear tests in late nineties have opposed the India-US nuclear deal right from the beginning. It seems the communists could allow the government to negotiate an India-specific safeguards agreement with the IAEA, and not let the deal go any further. That would buy the government time and avoid early elections but leave the deal in limbo.
