Why battery operated cars are not the right thing for India - Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Secretary V. Subramanian wrong totally
Venugopal Rao
Jun. 18, 2008

The leading battery-operated vehicle manufacturers Mahendra, Bajaj Auto Limited, Honda Motors, Reva Electrics, Electrothurps, Eco Vehicles, Yo-Bikes and E-Bikes participated in a meeting. In a meeting with the major battery-operated vehicle manufacturers in the Ministry, Subramanian said that the Government was keen to work out a conducive policy for large use of battery-operated vehicles in the country.

Naďve and ill informed Indian politicians and bureaucrats have brought India to its knees with crude oil price at $140 a barrel. Indian economy will collapse if oil price doubles from here.

But battery operated cars will just make things worse for common Indians. Car are primarily owned by a class of Indians who are rich by inheritance, outsourcing money from America and Europe, or credit cards and personal loans. People who belong to the last category have increased by fifty folds. People live of their credit cards these days.

Battery cars will force these ‘car owners’, who should not own cars in the first place, to use up domestic electricity which is subsidized by the Government by poor people. This will increase the electricity cost and make life hard for common people in India.

What should happen is that India should stop subsidizing the imported oil. India should allow open market price for petroleum products. These ‘car owners’ will pay real market price for the gasoline, run out their credit card limits, and eventually stop using the cars and start walking in the streets and use public transportation again. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Secretary V. Subramanian totally wrong again. This is just an example of another ill informed Indian bureaucrat that lacks common sense.
