Jammu and Kashmir gets ready for assembly election – election commission identifying sensitive booths
Media Release
Jun. 15, 2008

The exercise for the forthcoming assembly elections has started and in its directive state election commission has asked the respective deputy commissioners to identify the supersensitive and sensitive booths across the state.

The election commission has to conduct the elections for 87 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. According to a senior official in the office of chief electoral office, the elections will be held in four phases, "Most probably elections will be held on the pattern of 1996 and 2002 elections and for that deputy commissioners have been asked to identify the supersensitive and sensitive election booths," the official said.

He said as yet the exact dates of election have not been finalised. "Keeping the threat to disrupt the elections by the militants into consideration there is no alternative but to go for phased polls," the official added. Deputy Commissioner of central district Ganderbal Abdul Majid Khanday confirmed the directive of Election Commission. "We have been asked to file reports about sensitive booths. I have written to the police to verify such booths and report that to me," he told Kashmir Times.
