Turkey beats Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 soccer thriller – Swiss home team upset Portugal
Media Release
Jun. 15, 2008

-It was thriller match. Turkey finally did what they could not do for fifty years plus. Two goals in the last three minutes gave Turkey a remarkable 3-2-comeback victory over Czech Republic.

At the same time Swiss team in their home turf beat the Portuguese 2-0. The Czechs went 2-0 up with a first-half goal from their all-time leading scorer Jan Koller and a 62nd-minute effort from midfielder Jaroslav Plasil.

Arda Turan pulled one back 15 minutes from time and Turkey equalised with three minutes to go when keeper Petr Cech inexplicably dropped the ball at the feet of Nihat Kahveci, who stroked it into an empty net.

Turkey then grabbed a dramatic winner two minutes later when Nihat broke clear to fire a right-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area that went in off the underside of the bar. Turkey keeper Volkan Demirel was sent off in stoppage time for pushing Koller over in an off the ball incident, Tuncay Sanli taking over in goal for the few minutes left.

Hakan Yakin scored twice Sunday to give Switzerland its first ever win at a European Championship with a 2-0 win over Portugal.

Although Portugal was already through to the quarterfinals as Group A winner and the Swiss eliminated, the co-host ended the tournament on a high note despite losses in its first two matches.
