Can occupied Iraq maintain its soverignty against US plans for permanent military base? What will McCain do?
Blalaji Reddy
Jun. 14, 2008

The future US troop presence in Iraq has faced opposition in both Baghdad and Washington. Iraqi prime minister, said on Friday that initial negotiations with the US on a bilateral status-of-forces agreement had reached a “dead end”

The biggest question is will Iraq be able to defend its soverignty against US plans for permanent military base?

According to Iraqi prime minister, a close ally of Bush Administrtion, US proposals impinged on Iraqi sovereignty.

It seems however that Iraqi officials are saying onething in the public and something else in the negotiation sessions. Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, suggested in Brussels that there could be a difference between Iraqi officials’ public stance and their position in the negotiations.

According to Iraqi PM, Iraq can’t extend the US forces permission to arrest Iraqis or to undertake the responsibility of fighting terrorism in an independent way, or to keep Iraqi skies and waters open for themselves whenever they want. One of the important issues that the US is asking for is immunity for its soldiers and those contracting with it. Iraq reject this totally.

Pro-Iranian Mr Maliki has reportedly reassured Iran that he will not allow any accord that would turn Iraq into a launching pad for an attack.

It seems it will be next US President that will make the final decisiion. McCain supported by industrial military complex will convert into a war launching pad for the US military.
