Pakistan's defense expenditure has been cut in the in the backdrop of a major financial crisis faced by Pakistan. Rising global food and oil prices have fuelled double-digit inflation since PM Gilani's Pakistan People's Party-led coalition came to power in March.

Gilani said Pakistan's "defense is based on the strategy of minimum, essential and credible deterrence and that we shall not enter into any arms race".

With the newly promised under the table American security guarantee, Pakistan is well positioned to cut the defense expenses.

For India, it is a different case. India’s main adversary is not Pakistan – it is China and perhaps NATO in case America turns neo con right wing.

India must maintain sufficient strength and credible deterrence for any superpower to rethink an invasion of India.

India will not oblige Pakistan with a reciprocal defense budget cut because India has to maintain strength against the West and China.
