The main reason why Gates fired Air Force secretary and the Air Force's chief of staff, is political – how deep was the disagreement? Was bombing Iran a factor?
US Air Force officers have pushed in recent months to purchase more advanced F-22 fighter jets and have resisted requests to put more unmanned aerial vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both issues have irritated Gates. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates wants US Air force to move into clean fuel unmanned aircrafts. He is determined to move world’s best Air force to further mechanization making its operations and capabilities far superior than any rivals.
At the same time US Department of Defense (DoD) is concerned about loss of life and future difficult missions.
The main reason why Gates suddenly fired Air Force secretary Michael W. Wynne and the Air Force's chief of staff, Gen. T. Michael Moseley is political.
The news media has reported that last year, a B-52 was accidentally loaded with six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and flown across United States, and was left unguarded for several hours by personnel unaware of the missiles'' presence.
In addition, during April, a Pentagon investigation found serious flaws in a $50 million contract tied to the service's Thunderbirds aerial stunt team, including improper influence and preferential treatment by senior Air Force officials.
In March disclosures were made that the Air Force had accidentally sent four ballistic-missile fuses to Taiwan 18 months earlier.
But these cannot be reason for firing Air Force secretary Michael W. Wynne and the Air Force's chief of staff, Gen. T. Michael Moseley. Operational mistakes happen all the time. These are serious mistakes but needs operational level changes and discipline. Changing the top bosses.
That leads to the next question – how deep was the disagreement? What prompted such decisive action from Bush Administration? Did US Air Force disagree to carry out a specific mission somewhere in world?
No one will ever know what really happened. Some think tanks believe, Bush Administration may be preparing to bomb Iran to help McCain win the November election. Is it a move by the defense Secretary to make sure appropriate people are in control in US Air Force to carry out such missions?
