Younis Khan and Yousuf Youhana registered half-centuries as Pakistan reached 273 for two on in reply to India's first innings total of 407 on the second evening.

The Pakistani vice-captain raised his 11th Test half-century before tea, while Youhana reached his 23rd fifty after the break with a boundary to third man.

Younis (55) and Youhana (56) kept the scoreboard ticking with singles but didn''t hesitate to punish the bad balls during their unbroken 94-run partnership.

Earlier, India picked up two quick wickets. Shahid Afridi fell for a quickfire 29 and Taufeeq Umar (18) failed to take advantage after being dropped twice.

Afridi smashed Pathan for three fours in an over but the left-arm seamer had the last laugh. On the sixth delivery, the Pakistani opener miscued a pull to be caught for a 21-ball 29 by Sachin Tendulkar at mid on.

Umar was dropped for a second time in the first over after lunch, edging an angling delivery from Lakshmipathy Balaji to third slip, where Virender Sehwag missed a regulation chance to his left.

The left-handed opener's luck finally deserted him when he flicked Balaji to short mid-wicket for Harbhajan Singh to take an excellent catch over his head.

LUNCH

India's last-wicket pair of Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble thwarted Pakistan with a defiant 44-run stand on the second day of the second Test on Thursday.

Harbhajan scored 27 and Kumble an unbeaten 21 as India posted 407 in their first innings after struggling at 363/9 at one stage.

Pakistan were 17 for no loss in reply at lunch, with Shahid Afridi (16) and Taufeeq Umar (zero) at the crease.

Umar was let off in the fourth over when Rahul Dravid dropped a regulation catch at first slip off fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji.

India added 63 runs for their last four wickets after resuming at 344/6.

They were in danger of falling below the 400-mark when they lost their ninth wicket at 363, but Harbhajan and Kumble batted stubbornly to foil Pakistan.

Wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik was the first to go, dismissed at his overnight score of 28 after failing to beat a Mohammad Khalil throw at the non-striker's end.

Irfan Pathan (8) was smartly caught by vice-captain Younis Khan at silly-point off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

Balaji also did not last long, contributing just three runs before being bowled by a faster one from leg-spinner Afridi.

Harbhajan and Kumble were then involved in an entertaining partnership, each hitting four boundaries.

Pakistan had to take the second new ball after 107 overs at 390 in a bid to break the partnership, but Kumble greeted fast bowler Mohammad Sami with two fours in an over.

Seamer Abdul Razzaq finally ended the Indian innings when he trapped Harbhajan leg-before for his third wicket in the innings.

Kaneria and Afridi also grabbed three wickets apiece.
