Safety upgrades at NASA will make future flights safer but Hubble repair difficult
Media Release
Apr. 30, 2008

The astronauts who will make the next space shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope say safety upgrades at NASA will make their flight safer but their job harder. Because of changes made as a result of the Columbia disaster, a large chunk of the shuttle crew's first few days in orbit will be spent inspecting Atlantis'' heat shield.

On the last Hubble flight, that time was devoted exclusively to docking to the telescope and to preparations for the first space-walk. These inspections of the heat shield will take time away from address[ing] any problems that turn up after they release the upgraded telescope from the shuttle and send it back into orbit. The shuttle will also carry extra supplies in case they need to wait for a rescue. That will make it more time-consuming to unpack and repack for activities such as space-walks, but the astronauts say they find the extra safety steps reassuring.
