A backlash against American and European companies can drive Coke and Pepsi out of India again - Coca Cola plant in Kerala face severe agitation
Kiran Chaube
Apr. 22, 2008

As Indians face inflation, the blame is going on globalization, Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, the American and European corporations and the western power bases. The love-hate cycle in India is not new for the western companies. As the American and European companies fail to bring in additional fresh capital into India, the backlash will swing towards an extreme end.

The current hyperinflation and rise in fuel as well as food prices in the developing world is blamed on US and European power bases and corporations that have gained immense market accesses in the name of globalization.

The pendulum has started swinging on the other direction again.

Rights groups on Tuesday launched a hunger strike demanding total shut down of soft drink giant Coca Cola's plant in a district of Kerala.

Pepsi faces similar challenged. Pepsi has put a symbolic CEO of Indian origin on the top to sooth Indian sentiment. But it is not working. Indian main streets question the need of foreign cola companies that have little regard for Indian values.

In 1978 Coca Cola company was shown the door by the newly elected Indian Government. A rebellion political alliance will take control of New Delhi that will be nationalistic in origin. It is possible some one like Mayawati will be the next Indian Prime Minister who will put Indian national interest before serving Indian oligarchs. The new Government may have support of the Left parties and unlike BJP and Congress will serve the Indian farmers and country side for the time since independence. India will opt for a new green revolution in the face of world food shortages.

The emphasis will shit from high tech, IT, outsourcing dollars and euro to food production and rural infrastructure development.
