New Delhi rejects allowing Pakistani currency in Jammu and Kashmir
Kirit Chauhan
Apr. 16, 2008

India was surprised at the suggestion and rejected it right away pointing it as a result of inexperience of a leader who is trying get cozy with the newly elected Pakistani leadership.

Union Water Resources Minister and PCC Chief Prof. Saifuddin Soz also described Mufti's idea of using Pakistani currency in Kashmir as "extremely deplorable, to say the least." In a statement issued here on Tuesday Soz said it was unfortunate that the PDP patron does not differentiate between a common currency in European Union and his demand for adoption of Pakistani rupee in Kashmir.

BJP today termed the statement of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for advocating the use of Pakistan's currency along with Indian currency in the state, "condemnable, outrageous and anti-national." The BJP said Sayeed and his daughter were in the habit of making objectionable statements and referred to the remarks about joint control of India and Pakistan for running the administration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to newspersons, BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the BJP had a very firm stand on the issue and that it would not allow pre-1953 situation in the state. It had rejected the special status to the state and would never support two constitutions, two prime ministers and two flags.
