India shows its financial might by taking leadership role in the developing world. India announced duty-free tariff preference scheme for the world’s 50 least developed countries including 34 African countries.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made the announcement at the opening of the first-ever two-day India-Africa Forum summit. Eight heads of African states and delegations from 14 African countries are in New Delhi.

The products that would be exempted from duties under the scheme would include cotton, cocoa, aluminum ore, copper ore, cashew nut, cane sugar, readymade garments, fish fillets and non-industrial diamonds.

India is planning to double the line of credit to African countries from the current $2.15 billion to $5.4 billion in the next five years.
