India may defeat China easily in Davis Cup Tennis

Mar. 1, 2005

China is shivering from the Indian Tennis power in the upcoming Davis Cup Tennis championship.

India have a very good record against the Chinese as they handed them a 5-0 drubbing on grass a Kolkata in 1999 before defeating them 3-2 in their own backyard on hard court in 2001.

China today tried to play down the court disadvantage in their Davis Cup tie against India saying they had the players who could take the fight to their opponents under all conditions. "It is true that we do not have much experience of playing on grass. But we have the guys who can raise their game and tackle the fast surfaces," China's non-playing captain Zhao Xie told reporters here.

The Chinese team, which arrived in the capital last night, held a relatively long practice session at the NSCI courts as their players worked hard to get used to the grass courts. "We have very few grass courts back home and so playing on grass has always been tough," he said. Zhao was, however, quick to point out that they had a couple of days to work on their technique to suit the grass courts and exuded confidence that they will take the fight to the Indians, who are favourites to win this Asia-Ocenia Group I tie at the DLTA Grounds to be played from March 4-6.
