Sri Lanka-India One Day International would be even more challenging

Feb. 23, 2005

While all focus now is on India-Pakistan cricket series, the just announced Sri Lanka – India ODI will be even more contested.

Sri Lanka will tour India in April to play five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) while South Africa will come in October, also to play one-dayers, say well-placed sources in the Indian cricket board. The issue was discussed at a working committee meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last week but was not announced to the media, said an informed source.

"The Sri Lankan team will come to India immediately after the Pakistan series to play five ODIs in April," the BCCI official said.

"The South African team will come in October to play only one-dayers as they had already played a Test series late last year," he said.

The official said the Sri Lankan tour was an unscheduled one. The December 26 tsunami disaster had affected their income following the abrupt termination of Sri Lanka's tour of New Zealand midway through the series.

The concerned Sri Lankan cricketers decided to return home from New Zealand after the tsunami disaster. "After the abrupt end of their tour, the Sri Lankan cricket board asked BCCI if they could play a one-day series to offset the losses suffered due to a reduction in the guarantee money that it would have received from New Zealand board for the full tour," said the source.

"Members in the working committee meeting okayed the one-day series but some members wanted the Sri Lankan team to also play two Tests along with five ODIs, for which talks are on with the their board," he said. South Africa had played a Test series in November-December.
