US agrees to put fuel supply promises on the contract but India suspicious of Americans based on Tarapur debacle and past American performances
Balaji Reddy
May 7, 2007

Washington has finally agreed to put down all its assurances on fuel supply in the 123 bilateral nuclear cooperation agreement, including that of developing a 'strategic reserve of nuclear fuel'', to ensure uninterrupted supply over a lifetime of India’s reactors.

But Indian politicians and bureaucrats know American politicians change their mind all the time. As Administration and legislators change, so does America.

In the past America has broken promises based on the whims of its politicians. The superpower dissolution by its Iraq adventure now is promising things to bring India on its side. But India has reasons not to trust the Americans based on what they did in Tarapur reactors in the past.

India looks for indigenous development of Thorium based reactors. The way Australians acted in discriminating India in Uranium supplies while providing unlimited Uranium to China is noteworthy.

India has reasons to be skeptical. The biggest obstacle in India-US relationship is arrogance of American politicians in trying to control Indian foreign policy by controlling its nuclear ambitions.
