Russia India energy collaboration – Putin invites India's Union Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar

According to media reports India's Union Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar will visit Moscow the week of Feb. 21 to work on closer energy cooperation with Russia. Aiyar plans to discuss India's ONGC oil company purchasing a stake in Russia's Yuganskneftegaz, teaming ONGC and Russia's Rosneft in developing the Vankor oil field.

The collaboration between Russia and India in the area of oil and natural gas is nothing new. But the energy needs of India in coming years make it evident that India’s has to depend on her trusted and tested partner Russia to a large extent. Russia also knows that if India’s energy requirements are taken care of, Russia and India can move ahead with other areas of cooperation like trade etc.
