General Electric is selling its Plastics division for $10 Billion and bought an oil company yesterday. The reason behind this move is to move into double-digit growth from single digit growth. Simply put, GE is now more of an arbitrageur than anything else Nothing can be worse than investing in a bad. Arbitrageur (arb).
GE was good in what it used to do. The Wall Street pressure has converted the company into a bad arb. When recession is eminent, GE decides to sell its plastics division and buy an Oil Company. Oil can now go to $20 a barrel. During recession plastics, an essential commodities especially with lower oil price will do far better than the metals. Plastics processing can boom with composites technology coming in and lower oil prices.
